Fear of Falling Leads to Increased Falls

In preparation for an upcoming balance lecture I came across this great article.  We know that fear of falling increases one's chance of a fall.  And this article helps to explain what we commonly see in physical therapy.  Fear of falling can lead to:

  • Increased stiffness and loss of motion
  • Stiffening strategies compromise working memory processes
  • Sensory information is impaired
  • Dynamic muscle action is frozen and impaired
  • Planning and movement execution are impaired
